Prof.
Kyeong Kyu Kim, Department of Precision Medicine, elected president of the
Korean Association of Radiophotonics Users
Prof.
Kyeong Kyu Kim (Department of Precision Medicine) has been elected as the 17th
President of the Korean Association of Radiophotonics Users. He will serve a
two-year term beginning January 1, 2024.
The
Korea Association of Radiophotonics Users was founded in August 1989 as a
public benefit corporation to promote the development of radiophotonics-related
science and technology, expand the base of domestic radiophotonics users,
promote exchanges among members, and activate research. Currently, there are
more than 2,000 regular members, and the organization holds annual research
presentations, international symposiums, and tutorials on the use of
radioluminescence. In addition,
workshops and briefings are held to reflect the needs of researchers in
connection with the construction of the Ochang Multipurpose Radiation
Accelerator, which is scheduled to be operational in 2028.
Prof.
Kyeong Kyu Kim received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the Department
of Chemistry, Seoul National University, and did postdoctoral research at the
Department of Chemistry, UC Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, USA. He is considered an expert in the field of X-ray
crystallography, which uses radiation light to determine the three-dimensional
structure of biopolymers, and is leading international research on the
three-dimensional structure of nucleic acids.
"I
am honored to take on the important role of president of the association in the
40th anniversary of the completion of the Pohang Accelerator in 1994. Over the
past 40 years, the accelerator has made the greatest contribution to the
development of science in Korea as a research infrastructure for basic and
applied sciences such as biophysical and chemical materials, and the
association will continue to do its best to help more researchers use the
facility efficiently to conduct world-class research." said Prof. Kyeong
Kyu Kim
Moreover,
he has stated "We will mobilize all of our capabilities to support the
construction of the multi-purpose radiation accelerator under construction in
Ochang so that it can be built as a world-class radiation facility and enable
cutting-edge research."
