SUNGKYUNKWAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Sungkyunkwan University established the Medical Research Institute on September 1, 1997 in order to develop into a research university for conducting globally competitive research. On September 1, 2012, the Institute of Medical Sciences was opened as an upper institution of the research institute. The Institute of Medical Science is managed by the dean of School of Medicine. It encompasses basic and clinical medicine within the medical department. In addition, the Single Cell Network Research Center established in 2016 and the Institute for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Therapeutics established in 2018 are integrated and managed to create the greatest synergy within the School of Medicine.

The Medical Research institute was established with the aim to contribute to the advancement of medicine and the improvement of public health through research and related projects in each field of medicine and medical care. In addition to academic research in fields of medicine and medical care, the institute actively promotes domestic and international academic exchanges, collection and provision of medical information, publication of regular/irregular publications, holding academic lectures, research presentations, workshops, and open lectures.

The Institute for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Therapeutics was opened in March 2018. It was established to cope with antibiotic resistant bacteria known to threaten human health and survival. It aims to understand the principle of antibiotic resistance occurrence and development of antibiotics with novel mechanisms to treat resistant bacteria based on research results. In addition, through cooperation and joint research with domestic and foreign antibiotic resistance-related institutions, we are trying to lead research on antibiotic resistance in Korea and promote industry-academia cooperation to develop technologies that can be commercialized or transferred to promote the health industry.

Professor Kyeong Kyu Kim (Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology) is the head of the research institute. In the 'International cooperation-based original technology development project to control multidrug resistant bacteria' held by Korea Research Foundation in 2017, the project entitled 'International cooperation-based development of multi-resistance controlling technique for targeting the master virulence factor expression signal’ was selected. It is being carried out through the Institute for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Therapeutics.
